what is the impact of glucose on the body? after a meal, glucose levels rise -- insulin is secreted by the pancreatic beta cells in response. Insulin is the "key" that allows the glucose to enter the cells and be used for energy. how does insulin work? - stimulates carbohydrate metabolism in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, & adipose tissue for ENERGY. - facilitates glucose storage in the liver (glucose is turned into glycogen). Low insulin = fat released as free fatty acids -- increase triglycerides and cholesterol. Pancreas Exocrine and Endocrine gland. Alpha cells release glucagon & Beta cells release insulin and amylin.
