BPT1501 ASSIGNMENT 2
2024

NAME: ZANDILE THANDIWE
SURNAME: NCUBE
STUDENT NO:36603295

, 1. A professional teacher is someone who not only possesses the necessary subject
knowledge but also demonstrates ethical behavior, empathy, and professionalism in their
interactions with students, colleagues, and the school community. They maintain
appropriate boundaries, prioritize the well-being and safety of their students, and uphold
the values and standards of the teaching profession.

2. evaluate the scenarios provided:

Scenario 1:

Mrs. Karateka, a grade 7 maths teacher,
2.1
demonstrated defensive holds and even performed
a chokehold on students during class.

Reasons against professionalism:

Endangering students: Mrs. Karateka's actions posed a significant risk to the physical well-
being of her students. Performing chokeholds and defensive holds, especially without
proper training or supervision, can result in serious injury or harm. The fact that one
student passed out indicates the severity of the situation and highlights the potential
danger posed by such demonstrations.

Inappropriate conduct: Beyond the physical risk, Mrs. Karateka's demonstration was
entirely unrelated to the subject matter of mathematics. Engaging in activities or
demonstrations that are not educational or relevant to the curriculum detracts from
valuable instructional time and can create confusion or discomfort among students.
Additionally, using physical force or techniques in a classroom setting can be intimidating
or distressing for students, undermining the safe and supportive learning environment that
professional teachers strive to create.

Scenario 2:

Pathetic, a grade 1 learner, was accused of clogging the toilet and ordered by her teacher to
unclog it with her bare hands.

Reasons against professionalism:

Lack of empathy and understanding: Accusing a young student of intentionally clogging the
toilet without first investigating the situation demonstrates a lack of empathy and
understanding on the part of the teacher. Rather than assuming malicious intent, a
professional teacher would approach the situation with patience and seek to understand
the circumstances before assigning blame or punishment.
