Giorgione, Sleeping Venus, Descriptive critic A descriptive critic focuses on the form of a work of art, noting that form in this context has two distinctions including details and str ucture[ CITATION Mar18 l 1033 ]. The Sleeping Venus has hills of the landscape behind Venus illustrating that she is in a sensual nature, as seen in Figure 1. Further, Venus seems to be in a relaxed state with one hand supporting her head and the other covering her groin illustrates the oneness of her body with the surrounding environment. Further, Venus’ curves relate to the landscape in the background[ CITATION Cun16 l 1033 ]. Interpretive critic According to our textbook, an interpretive critic reveals the content of a work of art hence helping the audience to understand the meaning[ CITATION Mar18 l 1033 ]. For instance, the painting Sleeping Venus uses light and color to the painting to illustrate emotion and warmth, just as Giorgione desired to convey[ CITATION Cun16 l 1033 ]. The fabrics that Venus lays on illustrates the emphasis on her stature and role as a goddess. The color palette in this painting produces different tones. For instance, silver has been used to illustrate colder tones compared to red and brown to demonstrate warmer tones. Evaluative critic An evaluative critic judges the artistic merits of the work based on three standards, including perfection, insight, and inexhaustibility[ CITATION Mar18 l 1033 ]. As noted earlier, the curves on Venus’ body mimic the hills of the landscape hence illustrating focus on perfection. That is because the painting is not meant sexual or for the male gaze but an illustration of female nudity as an illustration of the perfect composition of nature.
