PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use
Competitive inhibitor of angiotensin-converting Treatment of hypertension in adults and
enzyme (ACE) (prevents conversion of angiotensin I children 6 yrs and older. Used alone or
to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor; may
inhibit angiotensin II at local vascular, renal sites). in combination with other antihypertensives.




Complications Medication Administration
Frequent (12%– 5%): Headache, dizziness, postural hypotension. Occasional PO: ADULTS: Initially, 10
(4%– 2%): Chest discomfort, fatigue, rash, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea,
upper respiratory infection. Rare (1% or less): Palpitations, tachycardia, mg/day. May increase by 5– 10
peripheral edema, insomnia, paresthesia, confusion, constipation, dry mouth, mg/day at 1- to 2-wk
muscle cramps. intervals. Range: 10– 40
mg/day.



Contraindications/Precautions
Hypersensitivity to lisinopril, other ACE inhibitors. History
of angioedema from treatment with ACE inhibitors,
idiopathic or hereditary angioedema. Concomitant use Nursing Interventions
with aliskiren in pts with diabetes. Monitor B/P, renal function tests,
WBC, serum potassium. Assess for
edema.
Auscultate lungs for rales. Monitor
I&O; weigh daily. Monitor daily pattern
of bowel activity, stool consistency.
Interactions Assist with ambulation if dizziness
DRUG: Diuretics (e.g., furosemide, HCTZ) may increase occurs.
hypotensive effects. May increase concentration, risk of
toxicity of lithium. NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, ketorolac,
naproxen) may decrease effects.
Client Education
To reduce hypotensive effect,
go from lying to standing slowly.
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Limit alcohol intake.
Reduces blood pressure and maintains within normal limits Report vomiting, diarrhea,
diaphoresis, swelling of
face/lips/tongue, difficulty
in breathing, persistent cough.
Limit salt intake.
