1) Researcher(R1): The researcher is responsible for explaining the
above steps in detail. Special attention should be given each time
mass is used in a formula to make it clear whether the mass is
referring to “the mass of the ball”, “the mass of the pendulum” or
“the mass of both.”

a. The magnitude of the change in Gravitational Potential Energy of the system,
|ΔPE|.

To find |ΔPE|, we used θ, (as measured by the angle indicator) to find
the maximum height, Δh, of the pendulum. Finding Δh will give us the
change in potential energy, ΔPE, of the pendulum while swinging:

ΔPE = (mpendulum+mball)*gravity*Δh, where Δh= rpendulum(1-cos𝜃) and
𝜃=the maximum angle at which the pendulum rises during the
collision, in radians.

b. The magnitude of the change in Kinetic Energy of the system, |ΔKE|.

Conservation of Energy allows us to find the change in Kinetic Energy,
ΔKE, while swinging:

ΔKE=ΔPE, so ΔKE= (mpendulum+mball)*gravity*Δh, where Δh= rpendulum(1-cos𝜃) and
𝜃=the maximum angle at which the pendulum rises during the
collision, in radians.

c. Create a formula in the excel sheet for the momentum in the
pendulum/ball system after the collision, p1. & d. Apply
conservation of momentum in the context of an inelastic collision
to find the momentum of the pendulum/ball system before the
collision, p0.

Following the calculation of energy within the system the momentum
of the ball after the collision, P1, and before the collision, P0 was
found using the equation below. Since the conservation of
momentum states that the total momentum of two objects before a

, collision is equal to the total momentum after the collision, these two
values are equal.

p=√(2*(mpendulum+mball)*ΔKE)
