Lab 3: Acceleration on Incline and Flat Track

Introduction:

The purpose of this lab was to determine various accelerations from a “Pasco” car as it
traveled down a flat or inclined track, of which were -3.5 ± -0.3 cm / s2 in the forward
direction, -6.9 ± -0.4 cm / s2 in the opposite direction, and 26.2 ± 3.3 cm / s2 on an
incline. A few of the technical terms that will be used in this report are acceleration, reported
in
cm / s2 , velocity, reported in cm/s, and friction. The values of acceleration were given by
finding the difference in velocity at the beginning and end of each trial divided by the change
in time. A summary of our findings are as follows: the acceleration theorized was 33.5 ±
0.9
cm / s2 , while the control trial’s acceleration was 28.0 ± 4.0. The acceleration down the
track at an incline was found to be 26.2 ± 3.3 cm / s2 , and the accelerations on the flat
track in the forward and opposite directions were -3.5 ± -0.3 cm / s2 and -
6.9 ± -0.4 cm / s2 respectively. The accelerations found on the flat
track were used to find the acceleration with friction, which was -5.2± -0.3 cm / s2
.

Procedure:

To begin the lab, the following materials were gathered: a computer, a LabQuest Mini, 2
PhotoGates with cable connections, a stabilizing rod, and a base, a “Pasco” car with an
aluminum box, a “Pasco” track, a measuring tape, a wooden block, a bubble level, and a
protractor. The track was placed on the lab table and leveled using the bubble level by adjusting
the screws on each leg of the track. Using a measuring tape, the distance between the legs of the
track (L) was determined to be 149±0.05cm. This value will be the slope of the triangle. The
wooden block was used to raise the track on one side to form an angle. The height of the wooden
block was measured with a measuring tape and determined to be 5.1±0.05cm (H). This value
will be the opposite length in of the triangle. The wooden block was then placed under the
rightmost

, leg of the track to form the angle, making the track no longer level. The drawing below describes
the set-up:
