One of us is lying - Karen McManus (358 pages)
book report made by Quinty Oostindie class 2E
13/03/2023

The story:
The genre of the book “one of us is lying” is (in my opinion) detective. In the story
they’re trying to find a murder, and that’s why I think it’s a detective. It also could
happen in real life because it’s really realistic, and the things that happen could
happen in real life.
The story is about 5 teens who get in detention because they had their phones in
their backpack when they weren’t allowed to. One of them is Simon, he has a Gossip
channel about the school.
When they get in detention, they find out that someone played a prank on them,
because none of them had put their phone in their backpack themselves. While
they’re in detention, they hear a car crash outside. The teacher goes outside and
meanwhile Simon grabs a cup of water. When the teacher gets back inside, Simon,
who had drunk the water, falls down. They check him and come to the conclusion
that it’s an allergic reaction. One of the students runs to the school nurse to get an
epipen but when he arrives, he can’t find them on the place they were supposed to
be. Simon gets picked up by the ambulance but it’s too late, he dies. All the teachers
and students are surprised, the only thing Simon was allergic to, was peanut oil. But
how could peanut oil come in his water? The 4 other students are immediately
suspects. But what no one knows is that Simon had a secret from each one of them,
what makes them even more suspicious. At the end of the book, the murder is
revealed and it turns out that it was Simon himself with an accomplice, which I think
is a really good and strong plot twist.

Who and where?
There are 5 main characters in the book. The perspective switches every chapter
which makes it really exciting to know who did it. Because of the 5 perspectives,
there are a lot of places in the book, but the most important ones are the school, but
mostly the detention room. The character I think is the most important for the story is
Simon. Simon is a student who has a Gossip channel: “about that” where he posts
all of the secrets that happen at his school. And the fact is: everything Simon writes
is always right. It’s like he knows everything. But apart from that, is Simon really
depressed. And his wish before he dies, is that the reputations of everyone get
stained and that they become less toxic. The other 4 main characters are: Addy (a
really popular girl), Bronwyn (a really smart girl), Nate (a ‘’criminal’’) and Cooper (a
really popular boy)
