Eva Smith Character Profile

Eva does not appear in the play but is central to the plot. "country bred" - implication that she is more naive than a city girl. She was capable of being a leader - shown through her protests against Birling and Co. "very pretty and looked as if she could take care of herself" - Sheila wrongly assumed she would find other work. Her prospects declined without work - she turned to "something else" (prostitution).

Inspector Goole Character Profile

Inspector is used as Priestley's mouthpiece (authorial intervention): "probably a Socialist or some sort of crank". He's a dominating character ("massiveness, solidity and purposefulness"). "One person and one line of enquiry at a time" - helps Priestley establish his chain of events. Distinctive and mysterious presence: "he never seemed like an ordinary police inspector". Goole is a homophone for ghoul, signifying his morbid interest in death and his omniscience.
