Vaak gaat het om artikelen die een aantrekkelijk rendement opleveren (winst verhogende artikelen) of actieartikelen waardoor de opkomstindex kan worden verhoogd. Voorbeeld de non-foodaanbod van de Albert Heijn en het aanbod van fietsen of magnetrons.

Het doel van de retailer is ervoor zorgen dat de primaire doelgroep al haar dagelijkse boodschappen in zijn winkel kan krijgen, waarbij de retailer volstaat met een minimaal assortiment tegen niet-concurrerende prijzen.
