Introduction of Elder
The person I chose to interview is my mother’s friend that I have known for several
years. Upon asking P.K. if I could interview her, she immediately agreed and was delighted and
honored that I chose her.
P.K. is a 75 year old female living in San Antonio, Texas as a widow. She was born in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and grew up there with her mother, father, and younger brother. Their
maternal grandfather resided in their home and frequently cared for them while their parents
worked. Her father worked civil service as a plumber and her mother worked for the state and
then at the post office. P.K.’s brother, who is now deceased, was four years her junior, served in
the Navy, married, and had two daughters that P.K. still maintains contact with. P.K. and her
brother were raised in the Catholic faith and it was always a large part of her and her family’s
lives. She graduated from a Catholic high school and began to work as a secretary for the state.
It was while working there she met her husband and married at age 20. They had three children,
two of which were twins. During her husband’s time in the Airforce they were stationed in
Japan, California, and Michigan. While in Michigan her husband was sent to Vietnam for a year.
Upon his departure she moved to Cordova, California to be close to her parents that had moved
there from Pennsylvania. One year later he husband returned, retired from the military and they
moved to San Antonio, Texas. After their children were out of school, she returned to the
workforce as civil service for the contracting officer at Randolph Airforce Base. 23 years later
she is retired, widowed and spends majority of her time with her grandchildren and friends. This
past year she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and is currently being treated as part of a trial at
M.D. Anderson. Overall, P.K. stated she feels like she has been very blessed and feels good
