Source 2: Improving access to digital communication

As a small, non-profit charity, we often see the advantages and disadvantages of digital
communication through the internet. We think that everybody should have equal access
to this important resource and advice about how to use different platforms, including
social media. We provide cost-effective, quick and easy training, encouraging people
everywhere to use the internet successfully.

We ensure that people can follow events around the world as they happen and give
advice on how to use the internet safely. Furthermore, we offer guidance on topics such
as purchasing devices, cyberbullying, loneliness, security and reliability.

In class, we read that not everyone had access to online news and media. This really
surprised me as I cannot imagine not being online. I thought I would try to investigate this

, more. I started talking to our IT department at school who put me in touch with a local
charity.

I interviewed some staff at the digital communication charity in my local area and spoke to
a volunteer, Mr Burston, while he was teaching a class for elderly people on using their
mobile phones. The people in the class had a lot of questions for Mr Burston and I tried to
help answer them too.

Mr Burston estimated that many households in the local area do not have access to the
internet and use the charity. Most people seek help to learn about security and should not
believe everything they read on the internet. I am keen to find out why.

If you ask me, the internet is a dangerous and complicated place. Of course, I would be
lost without it; it does make my life easier. However, there is so much hate on the internet
you should think carefully about who you talk to and what you read. Sometimes I think it
was easier when we didn’t have the internet.

There is also a large amount of misinformation on the internet which is dangerous for our
physical and mental wellbeing. According to the United Nations, accounts of racism are
on the rise which cause conflict and societies to become less stable.

I also worry about those families and people who cannot afford multiple devices and
internet connections. They do not have easy access to all this information and the news
that is happening around them. I’m not sure that the internet is good for us.

I understand what you mean about the rise of hate speech and misinformation on the
internet, however, I do not believe there is an easy solution. Our priority should be to
have everyone online, so the information gap does not widen, and opportunities are
equal. Recent research shows that there are 2.7 billion people worldwide who are not
connected to the internet. Isn’t this unfair?

As a Human Rights Advisor, we call this the ‘digital divide’ and we see it everywhere.
There is a lot of action from charities offering free computing courses to support young
and old users. During the Covid-19 pandemic many parts of our society could not access
services such as banking, health or communication, making normal life difficult. This must
change.
