Mr. Williams has an outdated view of the learner as he does not view each learner has a total
being. He believes it is his responsibility to get the information into the learners brains and not
that learners have to create their own meaning for information to be retained better. Further he
believes learning is an individual process and is not aware of the power of collaboration.
collaboration allows learners to work with the information in many ways, which also aids
retention. Mr. Williams sees the learners as blank vessels who need knowledge imposed upon
them. Mr. Williams view of the learner is also outdated because he is not aware of the
importance of using learners prior knowledge and he is not aware that as a total being, learners
have needs that need to be satisfied so that they can be put in the best position to learn. Mr.
Williams does not seem to understand, because of his view, that learners come to the classroom
with experiences and self- belief systems that must be acknowledge and sometimes changed in
order to put the learner in the best position to learn. Mr Williams groups all learners together and
does not see the importance or value in understanding what makes each child different.
An updated view of the learner will view the learner as a holistic and whole being, this teacher
will value the individual experiences that each learner brings to the classroom. This view is that
the environment plays a crucial role in the learners learning. This view shows us that problems
regarding development is not only located in one system. An understanding of a learners
systems can help us to develop an appropriate way of thinking which could be beneficial for the
classroom. The interactions between a child and the environment is complex and this influences
our attitude and how we engage with the learners. If we understand the systems and their
interactions, we begin to respect the uniqueness of the learners, we create the ideal environment
for learning as we contribute to the learners positive self- image and understand that learnres are
always changing.
