Indication(s):
- Prevention and treatment of megaloblastic and macrocytic anemia.
*Given during pregnancy for the promotion of normal fetal development and prevention of neural

Common side effects:
Flushing, malaise, erythema, pruritus, skin rash, and, in rare cases, allergic bronchospasm, nausea,
loss of appetite, abdominal pain.
*Patients should be aware that folic acid supplementation may cause urine to turn more intensely
yellow in color*
Adverse effects: No life-threatening adverse effects.
Patient Teaching:
- Instruct patient to notify health care professionals if rash occurs, a possible indicator of
hypersensitivity.
- Instruct patient not to exceed RDA as the effectiveness of mega dosing for treatment of various
medical conditions is unproven and may cause side effects.
Nursing Interventions:
-Provide education on importance of consuming foods high in folic acid including vegetables, fruits,
and organ meats; heat may destroy folic acid in foods.

-Takes 3-4 years for sexual development to occur
-Male pts: report priapism, hard to pee, gynecomastia
-Female pts: virilism (see interventions), hypercalcemia
-Female pts: Report if you plan to become pregnant/are pregnant or breastfeeding
-Report: edema, hepatitis (yellowing skin/eyes, abdominal pain), unusual bleeding or bruising
-Diabetic pt: monitor blood glucose closely

-Instruct pt to take doses daily and not to skip doses, double doses, or stop abruptly.
