Question 1: Lowest Quarter of Unemployment in South Africa
Reading a multimodal visual text requires careful attention to the data points displayed
across all population groups and time periods (Statista, 2024). The graph tracks quarterly
unemployment rates across four racial groups from Q1 2019 to Q2 2024.
1.1 Identification and Evidence
The quarter in which unemployment was the lowest across all population groups in South
Africa is Q1 2019. In that quarter, the data shows the lowest figures recorded across all four
groups on the graph. The White population recorded 6.6%, Indian/Asian recorded 8.6% (one
of the lowest points on their line), the Coloured group stood at 11.4%, and Black/Africans
were at 31.1%. While the Black/African rate was already high, 31.1% is the lowest point on
their entire line across the full period shown. When compared to subsequent quarters, every
group’s unemployment rate trends upward from this point, particularly following Q1 2020
when the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown and broader economic disruption became visible
in the data. The graph therefore confirms that Q1 2019 represents the period of relatively low
unemployment before the marked rise that followed.
Implementation Insight
The graph begins at Q1 2019, so it is important to note that this represents the lowest
point within the period depicted, not necessarily the lowest unemployment rate in South
African history. The visual is time-bound and the answer must reflect only what is
shown.
