As a registered nurse working in a med-surg and behavioral health unit, ergonomics plays
an important role to ensure a safe and efficient environment for myself, my colleagues, and my
patients. These conditions present in my work area are physical, cognitive, and organizational
ergonomic conditions. Physical ergonomics apply to workplace set up, lighting, overall
environmental conditions. Cognitive ergonomics may include mental processes, requirements of
tasks, human performance, and mental workload. Organizational ergonomics focuses on
management skills, work culture, and more. This essay will address the present and/ or absent
ergonomic conditions within my hospital.
Describe the physical, cognitive, and organizational ergonomic conditions present or absent
in the assessment of your work area.
When addressing the physical ergonomic conditions of a med-surg/ psychiatric unit, one
must first consider whether devices and environment help ease the physical difficulties an RN
may experience in this unit. In my work area, we each have our own WOW (workstation on
wheels) to work with. This station is mobile and is able to be adjusted to one’s height. This is
convenient for those who are taller or shorter than most and the keyboard is almost adjustable in
order to prevent any strain on the wrists. Unfortunately, we do not have the best seating at my
facility resulting in straining or back pain during long periods of charting. A common device our
hospital lacks is a transfer or lift device. This tool is used by staff to help move and or transfer
larger patients. Without this tool, we are forced to move and transfer heavy patients using our
own strength. If not positioned correctly during a lift, one could cause harm to their spine or
other parts of their body. My workplace also lacks adjustable lighting which is needed on the
