Aantekeningen Lecture 5 – Q&A Session
1. What exactly is the lateral and medial pain system in the brain?
Lateral = lateral nuclei + S1/S2 sensory component of pain (localisation, intensity,
quality)
Medial = medial nuclei + ACC & PFC affective-motivational component (unpleasant/
distressing)
2. What is the role of the Insular Cortex?
Integrates sensory and affective pain components, crucial for representation of body integrity.
Emotional = more medial.
Attentional = more lateral.
Ascending pathways:
Spino-thalamic pathway
Spino-amygdaloid pathway
