Health care as a whole, is a complex industry, as its best practices are in a constant state of
evolution as new information is gathered by clinicians and scientists alike. It is crucial for
organizations to stay on top of the most up to date information pertaining to their specialty in
order to promote the best care for their patients and improve upon outcomes within their
community. By doing so, the organization will be able to ensure the most effective and efficient
methods are being utilized in order to meet their goals. For this reason, may health care
organizations tend to collect different metrics to understand their own performance, identify
areas in need of change, or judge the efficiency of a change. This information is then used to
create initiatives within the facilities which will enhance their ability to work towards providing
optimum patient care.
The Leapfrog Group
The Leapfrog Group was originally designed in 1998 by a small group of business leaders
who shared the same vision to transform U.S. healthcare. Officially founded in 2000, the
watchdog group had identified several causes for dysfunction within the market place forcing
employers to spend billions on coverage with no true way of judging quality. At the time their
principles were considered outlandish but today are considered more main stream such as ability
and access of patients to make informed decisions or the ability to pay for the best outcomes at
the best price. Leapfrog stood in favor of more transparency from hospitals on quality in order to
make this a reality. Today the Leapfrog Group focuses on its hospital surveys and its safety
grade to help bring this transparency to the public. Leapfrog promotes collaboration across the
entire healthcare delivery system to change. (The Leapfrog Group, n.d.) Leapfrog
