Evidence for The Collapse of
The Weimar Republic 1933:
• 1919 – 1933: There were 20
separate coalition governments
that collapsed.
• Treaty of Versailles: Article 231
War Guilt Clause, £6.6 billion
reparations, loss of land and
empire, reduced armed forces.
• 1923 Occupation of The Ruhr and Hyperinflation Crisis.
• 1929 Wall Street Crash and resultant Great Depression.
• Rise of political extremism: Nazism, Communism
• Political Violence and Assassinations which totalled 376 (1919-1923), for
example: Foreign Minister Walter Rathenau and Matthius Erzberger.
• The Constitution: Article 48 [power to rule by decree], Article 25 [power to
dissolve Parliament], Article 43 [2/3 majority needed to pass a motion in
Parliament].
• The Reichstag Fire (1933), blamed on Communist Marinus van der Lubbe a
Dutch Communist leading to further political tension.
• 1933 Enabling Act, dissolving rule of law and civil rights.
• 1933 Protection of the People and the State Act.
• Street violence and intimidation (e.g. SA and The Red Front Fighters (KPD)).
• Role of Paul von Hindenburg, influenced by von Schleicher and von Papen, it was
he who appointed Hitler Chancellor. It was also he who dissolved Parliament at
Hitlers request and failed to remove him from power when he dissolved state
liberties or leave a safety barrier against Hitler’s power when he died.
