Mental Prepara on:

• The single most important factor in officer survival is mental condi oning.



• The transi on from civilian work to employment as police officer necessitates some mental
and emo onal condi oning to adapt to the psychological pressures of police work.

• Some factors involved in psychological preparedness:

- Sociological and psychological prepara on
- Both formal and informal educa on
- Personal value system

• Officers must avoid developing a5tudes that are counterproduc ve of job performance:
- Isola onism and ostracizing others
- Becoming paranoid and regarding all people suspiciously or as would-be criminals
- Withdrawing from or failing to be a normal part of the community.

Before each shi8 the officer should make a personal check for the following:

• Cleanliness

• Personal grooming- fresh shave, neat clean hair, clean fingernails, etc.

• Uniform:
- Tailor to fit as well as possible, clean pressed and in good repair, shined footwear, well
maintained duty belt and Name tag.

• Personal Equipment:
- Notebook, pen/or pencil
- Sidearms clean opera onal and fully loaded
. Ammuni on-both in the weapon and extra magazines should be clean dry and current
- Foul weather gear- boots, raincoat, cap cover, gloves
- Handcuffs- clean and opera onal; key(s) MUST be readily available for use
- Body armor- should be worn by each officer at all me while on duty.

- Maintain good posture; always walk and stand erect; DO NOT slouch

- Wear headgear properly, not cocked to one side or the back of the head
- Remember that a direct rela onship exists between appearance an a5tude: Both the public
and yours
- Esprit de corps is higher among officers who belong to a sharp, snappy ouEit.

which way street numbers run; traffic routes, i.e., main arterial streets, dead ends, overpasses,
back roads, one-way streets, and alleyways) increase probability of on-site arrest and officer
safety.
