B. Explanation of Workflow Aspects
In the workflow analysis, the use of several shapes to precisely define each step of the
workflow involving ESI level 3 patients. The starting and endpoints of the workflow both use an
oval to signify the start or termination of the workflow process. At each step in the process, a line
connector is used to signify the relationship between the levels, provide information on the
number of patients (“N”), and the mean time to complete (“M”). The process shown is the
patient flow through the emergency department, consisting of five patients with an emergency
severity index (ESI) level 3.
The first process in the workflow is the patient being registered into the health
information system (HIS) by the receptionist. Process steps are symbolized with a rectangle and
make up the majority of the workflow. The registration process has a mean time of 21.4 minutes
for each patient presenting for treatment.
After being registered, the patients wait until the triage nurse is available. During this step
in the workflow analysis, the patients’ wait had a mean time of 32.6 minutes. Delays in the
