SCENARIO: The Workplace Stress Questionnaire (WSQ)
A human resources manager at a large South African manufacturing company is con-
cerned about employee burnout and absenteeism. She approaches a registered psychol-
ogist, Dr Mokoena, and asks him to help identify employees who are experiencing
high levels of work-related stress so that she can design appropriate employee wellness
interventions.
Dr Mokoena uses the Workplace Stress Questionnaire (WSQ), a self-report ques-
tionnaire designed to determine the level of an employee’s perceived occupational stress.
The questionnaire has four sections:
• Section 1 (Items 1.1–1.5): Biographical information (age, gender, job level,
years of service, department)
• Section 2 (Items 2.1–2.10): Perceived workload stress (Likert-type rating items,
5-point scale: 1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree)
• Section 3 (Items 3.1–3.8): Interpersonal relationship stress (various item types)
• Section 4 (Items 4.1–4.4): Organisational support (multiple-choice and open-
ended items)
The questionnaire manual includes:
• Figure 1: The WSQ instrument (full item list)
• Table 1: Item means and item variances for Section 2 items
• Table 2: Split-half reliability data (odd vs. even items, 10 respondents)
• Table 3: Test-retest data (same 10 respondents, administered 3 weeks apart)
• Table 4: Item-total correlations for Section 2 items
Dr Mokoena asks a team of psychologists — Lindi, Carl, Banti, Jan, and Gcina —
to evaluate the WSQ.
WSQ Selected Items (Figure 1 excerpt):
• Item 2.1: I feel overwhelmed by the amount of work I am expected to complete.
• Item 2.3: My workload prevents me from spending adequate time on each task.
• Item 2.6: I enjoy coming to work most days. [Negatively worded]
• Item 2.11: I feel that my supervisor does not care about my wellbeing. [Added late]
• Item 3.5: Which of the following best describes your relationship with colleagues?
