Assignment 1: Case Study 1
Part A: Recruiting and Selection
1)
I do not agree with the recruiting strategy used in the case study. Big Time Computers
seems to be successful company selling very high-end equipment. Searching for candidates using
a newspaper does not seem to match with Big Time's hiring goals. The position they need to fill
is a very high level position requiring advanced technical writing skills. A local newspaper only
covers a small geographical area and this narrows down the field of potential candidates
significantly, forcing management to settle on an individual that may not be a perfect fit. The
only real advantage of a local newspaper ad is that you can typically fill the position faster as
they are in the local area and will not need to relocate. An online job ad with national reach could
have resulted in multiple qualified candidates and during the interview process, someone may
have satisfied all of the interviewers (Friend, n.d.).
Promoting an internal candidate into this position and then hiring an outside candidate to
fill in the empty position would have made more sense in my mind. As the case study says, Big
Time has a very well thought out process for creating their technical manuals. Selecting someone
from the outside would take more time to learn the process, especially since this new hire is in a
upper level position. Hamrick (the technical editor) has a English degree so he should be capable
of filling this new position as a lead technical writer. It seems Ms. Cavanaugh did not even
consider him for the position. Internal hiring can save time, money, and eliminate much of the
risk involved with outside hiring (Fica, 2018).
Online recruiting could have offered a wider pool of qualified candidates, a referral
strategy using current employees to recommend others, and internal recruiting/promoting all
