UNIT 3
STRUCTURE OF AN ATOM
The existence of atoms have been proposed
since the time of early Indian and Greek
philosophers.
The word "ATOM“ has been derived from the
Greek word “atomos” which means uncut
able or non divisible.
, Historical development of Atomic Theories
Plato(student of Socrates & teacher of Aristotle):
adopted Empedocles belief that everything is made
of four element: Earth, Water, Air & Fire.
• His successor Aristotle also adopted the concept of
four elements.
• He introduced the idea that elements can be
differentiated based on properties.
, Democritus(student of Leucippus): was a Greek philosopher who
proposed the atomic theory of matter.
• Democritus proposed that all matter is made up of tiny, indivisible
particles called atoms.
• He suggest that the world is made up of two things empty space and
tiny particles that he called atoms.
• The theory of Democritus is very general and was not supported by a
experimental evidence.
• Democritus taught the theory of atomism ,which held the belief that
indivisible and indestructible atoms are the basic component of all
matter in the universe.
