,AFL1501 SEMESTER 1 ASSIGNMENT 5 2026
DUE 2 JUNE 2026
Section 1: Overall Module Reflection
Question 1
Before I started AFL1501, I thought language was simply a tool for communication. I
believed it was just words we use to speak to each other. I did not think deeply about
how language connects to who we are as people. My understanding was very basic and
surface level.
This module has completely changed my thinking. I learned that language is not just
about grammar and vocabulary. It is deeply connected to our identity, our culture, and
our sense of belonging. When I speak my home language, I am not just communicating.
I am expressing a part of my soul that English cannot fully capture. I now understand
why my grandmother insists on speaking our mother tongue at family gatherings. She is
preserving something precious.
What stood out as most meaningful to me was learning about the concept of Ubuntu
through language. The way we greet each other, the respect we show through forms of
address like Mama and Baba, these are not just words. They carry deep cultural values
of respect and community. I realised that language can build bridges between people or
create walls. When someone greets me in my own language, I feel seen and respected.
, I also learned that South Africa's multilingualism is a gift, not a problem as some people
say. Each language carries a unique way of seeing the world. Before this module, I
sometimes felt ashamed of my accent or my mother tongue influence when speaking
English. Now I understand that this is part of my identity and I should be proud of it.
The module taught me that language can include or exclude people. In a diverse
country like ours, the language we choose to use can make someone feel welcome or
like an outsider. This awareness has made me more careful and kind in how I
communicate.
AFL1501 has given me a new lens to see myself and others. I now pay attention to how
people use language to express their identity. I listen more carefully to the stories
behind people's names and the meanings in their greetings. This module did not just
teach me about language. It taught me about humanity.
