, Introduction
The nervous system is the body’s primary internal communication and control network. It
continuously monitors the internal and external environments, processes sensory information,
and coordinates rapid, short-term responses to maintain homeostasis.
Main Divisions of the Nervous System
Central Nervous System (CNS):
● Brain: The master control center; processes sensory data, integrates information, and
initiates motor responses.
● Spinal Cord: The structural highway connecting the brain to the rest of the body;
coordinates simple reflex actions independent of the brain.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS):
● Sensory (Afferent) Nerves: Sensory receptors that detect stimuli and transmit input
signals toward the CNS.
● Motor (Efferent) Nerves: Transmit output signals from the CNS to effector organs
(muscles or glands) to trigger a response.
