,QUESTION 1: LEARNER DIVERSITY (10 marks)

1.1 What is meant by the term “diversity” in an educational context? (2)

Diversity in education refers to the differences that exist among learners in the classroom. These
differences may include language, culture, religion, socioeconomic background, learning abilities,
personalities and learning styles. Inclusive education recognises that all learners are unique and
should be respected, valued and supported equally in the learning environment (Maapola-
Thobejane & Mashau, 2020: 68–69; Department of Education, 2001).

1.2 What does access to the curriculum mean for learners? (2)

Access to the curriculum means that all learners should have equal opportunities to participate in
learning and understand the knowledge and skills being taught. Teachers should adapt teaching
methods, learning materials and assessment practices to remove barriers to learning and ensure
that every learner can participate meaningfully in education (Maapola-Thobejane & Mashau, 2020:
77; UNESCO, 2017).

1.3 How do introvert and extrovert learners behave differently in the classroom? (2)

Introvert learners are usually quieter and may prefer working independently or thinking carefully
before speaking in class. Extrovert learners are generally more outgoing, enjoy group discussions
and participate more actively during classroom activities. Teachers should understand these
differences and create opportunities for both types of learners to participate comfortably (Maapola-
Thobejane & Mashau, 2020: 74–75; Tomlinson, 2014: 34).

2

, 1.4 How does poverty affect learners’ educational outcomes? (2)

Poverty negatively affects learners’ educational outcomes because learners from poor households
may struggle with hunger, stress, lack of resources and limited access to educational support. These
challenges can reduce concentration, attendance, motivation and academic achievement at school
(Maapola-Thobejane & Mashau, 2020: 80–84; UNESCO, 2017).

1.5 What does the phrase “put yourself in their shoes” mean in relation to learners? (2)

The phrase “put yourself in their shoes” means that teachers should try to understand learners’
feelings, challenges and experiences from the learners’ perspective. This helps teachers show
empathy, provide appropriate support and create inclusive classrooms where learners feel
respected and understood (Maapola-Thobejane & Mashau, 2020: 82; Florian & Black-Hawkins,
2011: 389-403).
