Sanitary drainage system
Sometimes referred to as drain, waste and vent (DWV) system.
DWV system
Consists of waste pipe, soil pipe, vent pipe, trap & interceptor, stack, branch,
house/building drain, house/building sewer, and sanitary sewer main.
Waste pipe
Conveys discharges of fixtures other than water closet such as lavatories, sink, urinals,
bathtub and other similar fixtures.
Soil pipe
Pipe which receives and conveys discharges of water closet with or without the
discharge from other fixture to the house drain.
Trap
A fitting or device designed to provide, when properly vented, a liquid seal which
prevents the backflow of foul air or methane gas without materially affecting the flow of
sewage or wastewater through it.
