BARRIER METHODS
• Condoms
• Diaphragms
o Pt must be refitted by provider:
▪ Every 2yrs
▪ If gained more than 15lbs (7kgs)
▪ If pt has had a full-term pregnancy or a second term abortion
o Use spermicide for each active coitus
▪ More spermicide inserted with diaphragm
o Must remain in place for 6 hours after coitus
• Hormonal methods
o Oral contraceptives
o Nuva ring
o Side effects:
▪ Angina
▪ SOB
▪ Lakepene from possible clot
▪ Headache or eye problems from stroke (P.E.) or hypertension
o Contraindications:
▪ Woman with history of blood clots, strokes, cardiac problems, breast or
estrogen cancers, smoking
• Depra-Provera Shot
o An injectable progestin
o Main Q: can cause decreased bone mineral density or calcium
o Need adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D
• IUDs
o Can increase risk of inflammatory disease, uterine perforation, or increase risk of
ectopic pregnancy
o Pt Education: change in string length, fowl smelling vaginal discharge,
pain upon intercourse, fever, chills -> indicative of infection
▪ IUD has moved with change in string length
INFERTILITY
• The inability to conceive for at least 12 months
• Sperm analysis 1st with male, then look at woman
• Tests for female?
o Include a die in fallopian tubes
▪ Make sure woman is not allergic to iodine or seafood
