A Study of Virtue Ethics

What is Virtue Ethics?
Virtue Ethics is a type of philosophy that would focus more on an individual's
morals than strict rules you HAVE to follow. It focuses on the “Should I help him?”
or “Would I help him?” It focuses on empathy, compassion, honesty, courage, and
more. Virtue Ethics is something that every human incompasses within them.
It isn’t something that every human has automatically. Some individuals learn
compassion, empathy, and more. It’s just a set of traits that humans possess and
they eventually develop them as time goes on.
Core Concepts in Virtue Ethics.
There are several core concepts you need to focus on when studying Virtue
Ethics. These are some concepts you’d HAVE to know: Virtue, Practical Wisdom, and
Human Flourishing. These concepts were originally established by Aristotle.
01. VIRTUE (Arete) – Virtues are positive traits that are great when it comes to
having morals. Some examples include honesty, empathy, compassion, and courage.
02. PRACTICAL WISDOM (Phronesis) – This is about following the right way in
the right specific situation. For example, a police officer pulls over a man speeding. The
man tells him that his wife is in labor and needs to get to the hospital. The police officer
makes a morally correct decision to allow the man to go without giving them a speeding
ticket and instead giving a warning.
