Automated Medication Dispensing System in nursing home
Introducing automated medication dispensing systems such as Omnicell or Pyxis
system in the long-term care facility could be beneficial in many ways. The automated
medication dispensing system is a device that fills prescriptions and dispenses medications,
involves the mechanical processing of handling and distributing medications. The automated
dispensing system in the healthcare setting has been shown to have improved patient safety.
It brings secure access to medications, simpler medication storage, reduced time for
controlled medication administration, reduced nurses’ involvement of stock management,
and fewer missed doses (Craswell et. al., 2020).
In long-term nursing homes, medications were manually dispensed by the nurses
from the cart. There were many incidents where the error in dispensing medication and off
count of narcotic have occurred. Those incidents put the patient’s safety at risk and impact
the quality of care. Moreover, the nurses become the liability of losing their nursing license
from the incorrect management of narcotic or dispensing the wrong medication. Therefore,
introducing an automated medication dispensing system in a long-term care facility will help
solve the problem. In addition, it has been shown to reduce the risk of medication error and
enhances patient safety (Mandrack et. al., 2012).
