Immunization Case Study
Assignment
The purpose of this paper is to answer the questions for each case study scenario and
to learn the recommended vaccination schedule, contraindications to vaccines, and how to
address aversion to vaccines.
Case
#1
Vaccine(s) due and
why
This newborn should receive the hepatitis B within 24 hours of birth. The
Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all medically
stable infants weighing greater than 2,000 grams receive 0.5 ml the first dose of the
hepatitis B vaccine to prevent spread of Hepatitis B infection. (Center for Disease
Control and Prevention, 2020).
Mother Positive for
Hepatitis B
If the newborn’s mother tests positive for hepatitis B then the newborn should be
administered 0.5 ml of the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine and 0.06ml/kg/dose of
hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) within 12 hours of birth. When the child is age 9 to 12-
months-old, they should be tested for hepatitis B antigens. If the hepatitis B series is delayed,
, then the child should be tested 1 to 2 months after final dose. (Center for Disease Control and
Prevention,
20
20)
.
Mother's Hepatitis B status
unknown
If the mother’s hepatitis B status is unknown, then the newborn should receive 0.5 ml of the
first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of birth. Attempt to determine mother’s
hepatitis b antigen status as soon as possible. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention,
2020).
Case
#2
Vaccines due at this visit
This 2-month-old should receive 0.5 mL of the second dose of the hepatitis B vaccine, 1.0
ml of the first dose of the Rotarix rotavirus vaccine orally, 0.5 ml of the first dose of the
diphtheria, tetanus & acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine, 0.5 ml of the first dose of the
Hemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)vaccine, 0.5 ml of the first dose of the pneumococcal
conjugate (PCV13) vaccine, and 0.5 ml of the first dose of the inactivated polio virus (IPV)
vaccine. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).
Return visit and vaccines due at next visit
This child should return in 2 months for 1.0 ml of the second dose of Rotavirus, 0.5 ml of the
second dose of DTaP, 0.5 ml of the second dose of Hib, 0.5 ml of the second dose of PCV13
and
0.5 ml of the second dose of IPV vaccines. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).
