Nursing pediatrics
MODULE 2
Assignment no. 1
1. Explain from your own point of view why changes in the care of the
newborn were implemented by DOH
In my own point of view, the DOH implements changes in the care of the
newborn because they aim to reduce the mortality and morbidity in newborns.
Exclusive breastfeeding, Antenatal steroids, Water sanitation and Good hygiene
are some of the Preventive Interventions for child survival. They aim to improve
the health of mother and her newborn baby. Unnecessary early separation and
suctioning of the newborn are some of the changes made by the DOH, because
by doing so may cause trauma and infection to the baby, data shows high rates of
mortality and morbidity of newborn with these practices.
2. Cite the old ways and beliefs in the care of the newborn and explain why
they were modified in the protocol
● Manipulation such as routine suctioning of secretions if the baby is
crying and breathing normally.
Suctioning newborn who’s breathing on their own after birth is being
modified in the protocol because it may cause trauma, bradycardia and
apnea to the newborn. The newborn baby will only benefit from suctioning
if it’s really needed.
● Putting the newborn on a cold or wet surface
36.5°C - 37.5°C is the normal body temperature for newborns. If
placed on a cold or wet surface, the body temperature of a newborn will
drop and may lead to abnormal thermal state. Continuous reduction of
baby’s body temperature causes stress and death.
● Wiping or removal or vernix caseosa if present
Vernix caseosa is a waxy white substance coating the skin of
newborn babies. It is being modified in the protocol because vernix is
thought to have some protective roles for the baby during a few hours after
birth.
