BIO-111-0901 Literature Review Assignment. Introduction This is a literature review for the peer reviewed article Evaluation of Several Methods For Breaking Dormancy of Bitter Vetch Seeds. The main objective of this literature review is to understand the data and results emerged from this study to help with further research. With this literature review, I am hoping to draw more insight on the different methods and treatments on breaking dormancy and germination of seeds to help with my own scientific research. Questions I hope this article will answer: How to scarify seeds, how long to soak seeds for and what to soak the seeds in after scarification, how certain scarification will affect germination, and how long does it take for seeds to germinate after scarification. The key scientific question that the author is addressing is what the best way to germinate seeds after several methods of breaking dormancy. The data/results from this study are that the final germination percentage, after six days, reached to 74.06% after being imposed in chilly cold stratification and the rest of the treatments did not improve the seed germination percentage. The main inferences/conclusions in this scientific article are that germination of the seeds used in this study were more successful with cold stratification. Bitter Vetch seeds were used in this study and the seeds germination increased when seeds were imposed to cold stratification, GA3 (gibberellic acid) and mechanical scarification treatments (Final germination percentage p.60). The significance of these findings is to help find ways and show treatments to improve seed germination after different stratifications. This article was very informative and helped answer my questions. My first question was how to properly do seed scarification. The study used in the article did a partial scarification for 30 seconds with sandpaper, GA3 (250, 500, and 750 ppm), KNO3 (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% w/v), cold stratification (2, 4, and 6 days), sulfuric acid (25, 50, and 75 seconds), hot water (90ºC; for 2.5 and 5 minutes, hydropriming via seed soaking in distilled water (4 and 8 hours) and mechanical scarification (Abstract p.57). My second question was how long to soak the seeds in and what to soak the seeds in after scarification. The study in the article soaked the seeds in hot water at 90ºC for 2.5 and 5 minutes and also in cold water for 2, 4, and 6 days. My third question was how certain scarification will affect germination; the article showed results that the seeds were affected successfully with cold stratification. My fourth and final question was how long it takes for seeds to germinate after scarification. The article showed that just after 6 days of cold stratification, the seeds germination reached 76.04%. If I take this line of reasoning seriously, the implications are that my seeds for my own experiment will be successful with germination and possibly also able to find new results that this article did not find. If I fail to take this line of reasoning seriously, the implications are that my own experiment will fail because I did not follow with a study form a peer reviewed article, or maybe I could find my own successful germination without following the exact steps the study in this article followed. Based on the references that the author used, I believe that Taxonomy, anatomy and evolution of physical dormancy in seeds by Baskin, J.M., C.C. Baskin and X.J.
