2.1. Mathematics is a language that makes use of symbols and notations to describe numerical, geometrical and graphical relationships. It is a human activity that involves observing, representing and investigating patterns and quantitative relationships in physical and social phenomena and between mathematical objects themselves. It helps to develop mental processes that enhance logical and critical thinking, accuracy and problem solving that will contribute decision making. Observing- the ability to look at a problem and be able to understand the demands that are required to come up with a solution. Representing- being able to confidently attempt and solve certain problems that one comes across and applying the methods that one has been taught or instilled. Investigating- the ability to look into the nature of a problem and come up with a plausible solution or problem solving strategy that matches the problem at hand. 2.2. The cake- the cake is one whole in its full capacity. If we slice it into four equal pieces, it means we have 4 quarters which is one whole. If you eat one piece you have taken off one quarter (1/4) and you are left with three quarters (3/4) of a whole. Fruits- if a fruit tree bears 10 fruits it means you have (10/10) fruits. If you give 3 people 1 fruit each from the tree you would have used (3/10) of the fruits and you will be left with (7/10) of the fruits. 2.3. (i) b
