Endocrine System
•study of hormones and endocrine glands
endocrinology
•Over 90% of animal body functions and
processes (physiology) is controlled/regulated by
chemicals known as hormones
•The hormones are secreted by glands and other
special cells located in specific organs such as testis,
kidney, ovary, brain, gall bladder e.t.c.
1
,• There are two types of glands that secretes these
. hormones
a) Endocrine glands- ductless glands which
secretes hormones into blood to be delivered to
target cells/region/areas within the animal’s body
e.g. ADH secreted by hypothalamus into circulatory
system and delivered to the kidney to influence re-
absorption of water
b) Exocrine glands- have ducts which secretes its
content directly to the target organ e.g. Insulin ,
glucagon – pancreatic cells.
, Gland: A cell or group of cells (tissue) that
.
secretes hormones
Hormones are “ messengers” used in relaying
information
Used in regulation of physiological activities
