Summary becoming a college writer Eng 105
Introduction College writing may be an exciting prospect or an intimidating endeavor. This book offers strategies and support for students at all comfort levels by covering the skills students need to succeed in first-year composition. This book also offers tools that will lead to effective writing in other college courses. Is college-level writing a step up from 12th-grade English class? Yes and no. When students enter college, previously learned skills will be useful, but a different kind of writing is expected (Thompson & Gallagher, 2010). As students’ programs of study progress, they are expected to write at increasingly sophisticated levels. The topics in college-level writing are more complex and refined. Further, writing in college is primarily an independent process. Although students have the ability to contact their instructor to ask questions and to share their writing with peers— particularly in this course—the instructor will not have the same oversight as a high school teacher and will not monitor every sentence as it is drafted. This does not mean students must write at the college level as soon as they enter the university. Becoming a college writer takes time. When students make the effort to gain the necessary writing skills, they succeed. Review the text in each section of the book several times until the concepts are clear. Put in the effort, and college-level writing will get easier over time.
