SIMPLE LIPIDS: WAXES
I. Explain what makes a compound a lipid
II. Describe the structure of fatty acids and explain how Waxes

Are organic substances made up of fatty acids and their SIMPLE LIPIDS: FATS & VEGETABLE OILS
naturally existing compounds and derivatives
Animal Fats and Vegetable Oils
Fats and other molecules that are insoluble in water
- Also known as triglycerides
Properties that must be met:
- Three fatty acid residues are joined to a glycerol
- The substance must be insoluble in water
residue by ester bonds
- The substance must be soluble in nonpolar solvents
- Usually contain two or three different fatty acid
- The substance must be found in biological system

- Classification is dependent on the fatty acid
IMPORTANCE OF LIPIDS residues in its structure
it serves as an efficient source of energy
it serves as insulators
they are cellular constituent
they are involved in the absorption of fat-soluble
vitamins (vitamins A, D, E and K)
lipoproteins are carriers of triglycerides, cholesterol,
phospholipids
CLASSIFICATION OF LIPIDS
Simple Lipids
– Are esters of fatty acids with various alcohol
– Fats and oils & waxes
Complex Lipids
- Are also known as compound lipids
– Are composed of fatty acids, alcohol and
additional group
– Phospholipids and glycolipids
Precursor and Derived Lipids
– Lipids that are derived from other substance
– Steroids and eicosanoids
