Indications Asthma, Cystic fibrosis, COPD Lung Failure Kidney Failure Shock Trauma Uncontrolled diabetes Asthma Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Hemorrhage Drug Overdose Metabolic Disease Chemical Poisoning Interpretation of Findings Normal Levels: pH: 7.35-7.45 PaCO2: 35-45 mm Hg Bicarbonate: 22-26 mEq/L PaO2: 80-100 mm Hg SaO2: 95% Client Education After the blood is drawn, apply pressure for 5-10 minutes. Inform HCP or healthcare worker if bleeding continues after 10 minutes of pressure. Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Check chart. -Confirm steady state. -Obtain and assemble equipment. -Explain procedure to patient and position patient. -Check Allen's test in selected wrist. -Thoroughly cleanse site with alcohol circling from center out. -If requested inject local anesthetic. -Palpate artery with wrist extended over towel to secure puncture site. -Slowly/smoothly insert needle, bevel up, 45 degrees, until flash of blood is seen in needle hub. -Stop and allow syringe to fill. -Retract needle and apply pressure to site for 5 minutes. -Place needle in plugging device, -Mix blood sample well by rolling in place in ice slush. -Before leaving check site for bleeding and palpate pulse distal to puncture site. -Dispose of waste in sharps container.
