,1. Define the term “school culture” in your own words and justify this
definition by referring to the views of the authors from the URL links provided
for this assignment.

The environment that you, as a teacher, create for all the different cultures that you
will interact with in your classroom is considered as “school culture”. You, as an
educator, should ensure that every learner’s culture is respected and that every
culture has a place in your classroom. No culture should be discriminated against.

Link 2: “The South African Schools Act (SASA) (Act, 84 of 1996) is one such
instrument designed to achieve equality and non-discrimination in education.”
(Link 2:73).

2. Carefully, read the case study from URL link 1 and explain in your own
words the culture of the school X.

The culture of the school X is very diverse. There are not only different languages
being spoken, but there are also a lot of learners with different learning abilities. The
school started out with 570 learners in 2008 – 2009 and grew to 800 learners in 4 – 5
years (2012 – 2013). The learners that were identified with barriers to learning
started at 25 in 2008 – 2009 and grew to 65 learners in 2012 – 2013. There are few
learners with physical disabilities as well, for example, a learner in a wheelchair, two
learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder, one learner with Scoliosis, and a few other
learners with ordinary learning difficulties.

The school consists of mainstream and ELSEN classrooms, which are categorised
by a few different cultures and racial groups, for example Setswana, Afrikaans, and
English. These are all separated for the reason that all of them will receive education
in their home language, except for Setswana learners who will receive education in
their second language, English.

Overall, the classrooms are overcrowded, and with no plans to build new and larger
classrooms, I believe that this contributes to the learners’ learning disabilities as
those learners do not get the attention necessary for the to succeed, or at least
improve. The school’s diverse culture makes it difficult for everyone to be the treated
the same. One can also not expect everyone to achieve, or even strive to achieve,
the same goals, because the learners all grew up differently. Some grew up in stable
homes, where they received love and care, while others grew up in very bad
circumstances or in very poor environments. Some were born into families where
they saw that it is okay to drink while you are pregnant, which causes another
disability in learners, namely Fatal Alcohol Syndrome.

3. How can you practice the principles of Ubuntu during your teaching practice
phase? Consider the principles discussed in URL link 4.

While reading this article, a few principles to practice, not only in life but also in my
teaching practice, came to mind.
1. I can be more caring. I can do this by trying to find out which learners do not
have friends. I can then try to find friends for those learners.

, 2. I can be more generous. I can do this by finding out which learners in the
class’s families are struggling financially and provide those learners with
stationary, for example.
3. I can be understanding. If a learner did not complete the homework, I should
try to find out WHY the homework is not complete, instead of just punishing
the learner.
4. I can be considerate. If a learner tells me that he/she cannot complete a
project, I should try to change the project a little, so that the learner is taken
into consideration and has a fair chance of completing the project.

4. Summarise factors relating to the physical and emotional safety of learners
and staff in the school at which you have been placed or where you were
placed during the previous year. Give examples to validate your explanation.
Read the information from URL link 2 to help you answer this question.

Staff:

- Physical safety:

The school I have been placed at are very focused on their values, one of them
being respect. This protects the staff members and prevents them from being
harmed by learners. The teachers do not “play” with the learners, so the learners
know that the staff members are not their friends. They know that they should show
respect towards the staff members.

The learners are also expected to put their bags under their chairs / desks, so that
the teacher can walk around between the learners while they are doing their work,
writing a test, etc. In this way, the teacher cannot fall over a bag and this also
protects the teachers from getting physically harmed.

- Emotional safety:

The staff members are allowed to talk to their Head of Department (HOD) or the
principal about anything at work that is bothering them. The principal at the school
that I have been placed at is a very understanding man and is always there to listen
when any staff members have something that they want to discuss with him.
Teachers can also talk to the school counsellor.

Learners:

- Physical safety:

The learners’ safety at this school is ensured through rules and protocols that must
be followed. Teachers walk around on the school grounds during breaks to make
sure that no one is harmed. During class time, the teachers must always be in the
classroom. If they have an emergency where they cannot be in the classroom, they
must ask the teacher that is in the classroom next to them to just check up on that
class. They also ask the class prefects to stand in front of the classroom. If it
happens that a learner is injured while the teacher is outside of the classroom, the
teacher must report it and further steps are taken from there.
