Part A
Slow-wave sleep
Slow-wave sleep is also referred to as deep sleep. During deep sleep, the muscles have an
opportunity to repair and grow. This stage allows for the recovery and generation of growth
hormones. Training exercises result in the breakdown of muscles, and the deep sleep period act
as a recovery phase where the muscles rebuild and grow. Slow-wave sleep is transitioned from
light sleep within 10 minutes. The amount of time spent in the various stages of sleep varies on a
daily business but around 23% of the time slept is committed to deep sleep (Patel, Reddy &
Araujo, 2020). During slow-wave sleep, there is no active brain activity, and this stage of sleep is
characterized by delta waves that EEG monitors. During the slow-wave sleep, memories are
consolidated and then committed to memory during the REM sleep stage.
REM sleep
REM sleep refers to the period where brain activity is restored and skills acquired in the
day are committed to memory. This sleep stage allows someone to retain the skill and knowledge
acquired. REM movement is transitioned from slow-wave sleep within 90 minutes of sleep. 22%
of the time slept is committed to REM (Patel, Reddy & Araujo, 2020).
Part B
Perceptual learning
It is a type of learning process where the ability of the sensory system to react to stimuli
is enhanced through practice. Learning in the perceptual technique occurs through sensory
contact with the environment and exercises in undertaking certain sensory exercises. Perceptual
