Introduction
Research in nursing is one of the major reasons as to the many advancements made in nursing
practice today. According to Houser (2018), “nursing research is a systematic process of inquiry that uses
rigorous guidelines to produce unbiased, trustworthy answers to questions about nursing practice” (p.5).
With the help of research, patient outcomes drastically improve. It is more so than ever, important for
nurses to understand the basic principles of research in order to help our patients receive the best care
possible. This paper will serve as in insight into different types of research and how it applies to making
nursing practice more effective.
Quantitative Research
“Quantitative research involves identifying the variables that represent characteristics of interest
and then measuring them in a reliable, valid way” (Houser, 2018, p. 34). Similar to data collection,
quantitative research collects data pertinent to the research in order to come to a conclusion.
Quantitative research is important because this type of research gives statistical evidence during
research. It tells if there is an improvement or not from previous work. Quantitative research looks at the
accuracy and preciseness of the information, which then helps to make educated determinations.
There are four major types of quantitative research design. There are experimental, descriptive,
correctional, and quasi-experimental research designs. Experimental design, similar to the scientific
method establishes a “cause-effect relationship among a group of variables in a research study” (CIRT,
n.d.). In an experimental design, a variable is changed in order to observe the effect of the change on the
other parts of the experiment. This will prove if the variable had a positive or negative effect on the
experiment. Quantitative research is more so based on numbers and statistics. It delivers an accurate
detail of the research.
