Week 5: HealthIT Topic of Week Assignment
This paper will analyze a HealthIT topic obtained by using the link provided in the
readings in the week 5 module. The analysis includes a brief explanation of the rationale for
topic selection and a description of how the selected topic impacts nursing practice. The analysis
will also discuss the use of informatics skill and knowledge uses, any further recommendations,
and a conclusion.
HealthIT Topic
With the current COVID 19 pandemic, I felt it appropriate to select a topic regarding PPE
and safety measures. This topic came from an article written by Reed (2020) appropriately titled,
“‘My hospital is a hot mess.’ Nurses plead for more PPE, safety measures amid COVID-19
surges”. COVID-19 cases are on the rise. This is no secret. Daily we see the increase in numbers
reported on the news. What we do not see, is the nurses, doctors and other healthcare providers
struggling to stay safe because PPE is in short supply. According to Reed (2020), hospitals all
over the nation have been reporting shortages since the very beginning of the pandemic and even
more so as numbers began to surge.
“Sufficient supply of PPE is essential to meet increased demand during the COVID-19
pandemic” (Gordon and Thompson, 2020, p 748). In nursing school, I was always taught that
N95 masks were made for a one time use and were to be discarded immediately upon removal.
Unfortunately, that is not the case in the midst of this global pandemic. Reed (2020) asserts that
nurses and other healthcare providers are finding themselves reusing the same N95 mask for an
entire twelve-hour shift if not longer.
As a staff nurse working in postpartum, I occasionally have the opportunity to care for a
mother who has tested positive for COVID-19. While we have been provided with a respirator
