2 examples of morally ambiguous characters in the story The Great Gatsby are:

Jay Gatsby

Daisy Buchan

1.) Jay Gatsby

The title character story, The Great Gatsby, is about a young man in his 30s. He was
born in rural North Dakota and become wealthy. His dream leads him from poverty to
wealth. His wealth is acquired by joining illegal activities such as distributing illegal alcohol
and trading in stolen securities. Though Gatsby has always wanted to be rich, his main goal
is to win the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan who married Tom and did not wait for Jay's
return. Jay Gatsby is described as a morally ambiguous character because of his relationship
with Meyer Wolfsheim who made Gatsby's life to success. This can be proved is page 67 of
the book where Meyer said to Nick that, he, Meyer, made Gatsby the man he was: "I raised
him up out of nothing, right out of the gutter"

His attitude towards Nick Carraway also describes the moral ambiguity of Gatsby's
character as he impresses Nick with his skill to make his dreams come true. Gatsby dreamed
to be wealthy, and he has attained them, however through criminal means. As a result, Nick
sees Gatsby as his doorway to a more exciting life.

His desperation for Daisy Buchanan also made his character described as morally
ambiguous. He could be a man who longs for wealth and attained it through criminal means,
but the mainstream of his desperation is by being human, who fell in love and try his luck to
win his love. So he is a good man whose main flaw is his obsession with trying to rewrite the
past. His morally ambiguous character made an impact as a whole in the story, as he shows
the good and evil sides.

2.) Daisy Buchan

Daisy Buchan is also an example of a morally ambiguous character. She is Nick's cousin
who lives in East Egg. She is described in the story as pretty and charming, as the author
said: " a wild tonic in the rain." She is the woman longed for by the protagonist, Jay Gatsby.
A woman who motivated Jay to acquire his wealth to gain her back.

She is one of the characters that made a major impact on the story as Jay's character
circulates on his motivation to gain back Daisy. In the beginning, the author foretells the life
of Daisy to have a cheater husband, Tom. Then, to build the sympathy of the reader, the
authors introduce the love of Gatsby to Daisy. Jay waited to meet Daisy again after 5 years
and got the chance because of Nick.
