Acetazolamide- Is a diuretic that is given to treat glaucoma, common adverse effects include tingling of fingers, paresthesia, tingling in extremities

Atenolol- beta blocker, treats high BP, check Pt’s BP to make sure they don’t have hypotension low BP which is an adverse effect

Atropine- is an anticholinergic Med, give atropine to a pt who is having a cholinergic crisis to reverse the cholinergic crisis and stabilize the pt, (example is a pt with
myasthenia gravis having a cholinergic crisis sludge everything gets wet hard to breath saliva incontinent urine diarrhea give this pt atropine)

Chlordiazepoxide- is a sedative give to treat and prevent delirium tremors, anxiety, alcohol withdrawal symptoms

Ciprofloxin- antibiotic treats infections

Cyclobenzaprine-Muscle relaxant that treats pain and stiffness caused by muscle spasms. When discontinuing use, taper off of the Med gradually to prevent
abstinence syndrome or rebound insomnia

Digoxin- is an anti-arrhythmic medicine given for BP support, it slows down the heart rate and strengthens the heart muscle contractions, it helps with atrial
fibrillation fast irregular heart rates of greater than 100. Report potassium of 2.8 because it is too low the normal potassium range is 3.5 to 5.0

Diazepam / Valium- Is a sedative that treats anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures. if overdose and too much diazepam / Valium is taken then give patient Flumazenil
which is a benzo antidote reversal agent. Flumazenil treats the sedation/drowsiness

Donepezil- Drug that enhances cognition in Alzheimer’s pts by increasing acetylcholine levels. Adverse effects include dyspnea SOB bronchoconstriction diarrhea and
dizziness due to the increased levels of acetylcholine

Epinephrine- administer this Med first during anaphylaxis (anxiety, hypotension, dyspnea from cefazolin allergy). Epi induces vasoconstriction and bronchodilation
during anaphylactic shock

Ergotamine- treats migraine headaches, teach pt to take one tablet at onset of migraine or aura, sublingual route

Filgrastim- is a Bone marrow stimulant that increases neutrophil count , it stimulates bone marrow to produce more wbcs and neutrophils. Helps to minimize
infection in chemo patients by making more wbc to fight infection

Flumazenil - is a benzo antidote reversal agent, give to pt who overdose and took too much diazepam /Valium benzo drug, the flumazenil treats the
drowsiness/sedation

Fluticasone - Using a spacer and rinse mouth wash after using fluticasone inhaler for chronic asthma helps to prevent adverse effects of oral candidiasis

Gentamicin- antibiotic given to treat infections, adverse effects can include tinnitus ringing in the ears, headaches, deafness, ototoxic

Heparin-is an anticoagulant drug, administer subcutaneous route at least 2 inches from umbilicus belly button.
If giving to prevent blood clot like a dvt discontinue heparin infusion if platelets is 96,000 that is too low, Normal platelet range is 150,000-> 400,000.
Adverse effects of heparin toxicity include blood in urine, bruising, hematomas, hypotension, tachycardia, nurse should report these to provider

Lithium- Med commonly given to treat mania bipolar disorders, teach pt not to take ibuprofen Advil nsaids as they increase lithium levels

Naloxone/ Narcan- opioid reversal agent, give for heroin opioid overdose and slow respiratory rate of 6bpm

Neostigmine- muscle strengthening Med that treats myasthenia gravis (muscle weakening disease), an adverse effect is miosis (pupils constricting due to the muscles
strengthening)

Metformin- is an anti diabetic medication that brings blood glucose levels down, monitor pt for hypoglycemia low blood glucose by testing blood glucose when
metformin is given

methylprednisolone / solu-medrol -A steroid given for allergies and inflammation, teach patient that blood glucose will need to be monitored, to avoid contact with
people with infections, and avoid grapefruit juice.

Metoclopramide / Reglan- Is an anti-emetic drug that prevents vomiting and treats GERD it is a good motility stimulator that speeds up stomach emptying and
movement of food in the intestines and adverse effect of this med is sedation and drowsiness, monitor pt for sedation

Simvastatin / Zocor -Is an anti-lipid drug that lowers cholesterol, teach patient to report muscle pain, avoid grapefruit juice, and expect medication therapy to be
lifelong (if patient discontinues medication cholesterol levels will return to the normal level before taking the medication in a few weeks)

Sodium polystyrene sulfonate- Med given to treat hyperkalmeia high potassium. when giving this Med, monitor pt for constipation which is an adverse effect (that
can lead to fecal impaction)

Sucralfate- is an antacid that treats ulcers /peptic ulcer disease, it forms a protective barrier over ulcers like a gel coating over the ulcer

Tamoxifen- treats breast cancer, common adverse effects is hot flashes, nurse should include education to the pt about hot flashes

Acetazolamide- for glaucoma- monitor/report tingling of fingers (parasthesia)
Adverse reaction to IV med- Anxiety, hypotension, dyspnea= give Epinephrine
Allopurinol- treats gout- drink 2 L a day of water
Amitriptyline- antidepressant/ nerve pain medicaiton – adverse effect – dry mouth, urinary retention – causes anticholinergic reactions
Amphotericin B – treats lung infection (histoplasmosis) – Adverse effect - Oliguria
Atorvastatin – monitor creatinine levels- could indicate Rhabdo
Baclofen- spinal cord injury- decrease in muscle spasms of flexor & extensors
Beclomethasone- glucocorticoid inhaler – rinse mouth after use
Bupropion- aide to quit smoking,. Adverse reaction - Insomnia
Calcium gluconate – interacts w. digoxin- causes hypercalcemia. Give when Mag is high
Carbamazepine- anticonvulsant- interferes w/ oral contraceptives
Catopril – treats BP- tell Dr. if you get a sore throat, indicates neutropenia
Cefazoline - Antibiotic
Chlordiazepoxide- prevents delirium tremors during alcohol withdrawal
Cholinergic crisis- administer atropine- anticholinergic agent
Ciprofloxacin – Antibiotic for UTIp contraindication – tendonitis- could lead to tendon rupture- report signs of tendon pain or swelling
Clindamycin- antibiotic- report watery diarrhea
Cromolyn- inhaler for activity induced asmtha- use 10 – 15 minutes before exercise or physical activity
Cyclobenzaprine- taper before discontinuing
Diazepam – benzodiazepine- Antidote – Flumazenil
Digoxin – treats BP & antiarrhythmic- don’t give if HR is low
Digoxin toxicity- yellow tinged vision, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
Diltiazem- Treats BP- edverse effects - shortness of breath
Docusate sodium- reduces surface tension of the stools to change consistency
Dopamine- BP support- shows its working by increasing cardiac output
DTaP- give first done at 2 months
Enalapril- treats high BP- Adverse effects - hyperkalemia
Ergotamine sublingual – treats migraines- take at onset of migraine
Fentanyl lozenges- store in storage container – move around in mouth, better absorption
Fentanyl patches- give stool softener
Fligrastim- increases WBC/ neutrophil count to fight infection
Fluoxetine – depression – adverse effect – sexual dysfunction
Furosemide- take w/ food or milk
Furosemide 2 X’s daily- increase intake of K rich foods, monitor for muscle weakness, dangle legs from bed before getting up
Gentamicin- antibiotic- adverse effects – tinnitis
Glargine insulin- do not mix with other insulin
Glyburide- antidiabetic
Haloperidol- Antipsychotic- Adverse effect- Akathisia (inability to sit still), dystonia, pseudo parkinsons
Heparin Adverse reaction – blood in urine
Heroin toxicity- give Naloxone as an antidote
Hydrochlorothiazide- diuretic- check BP before giving
Hydrocodone w/ acetaminophen- decreased respiratory might occur
Hydroxyurea- for sickle cell anemia
Hyperkalemia on ECG – widening of QRS complex & tall tented T waves & ST elevation = ischemia
Hypokalemia on ECG – presence of U waves
Inhaler spacer- prevents oral candidiasis
