NR 321Exam 1 Study Guide Physiologic Adaptations to Pregnancy
Review the fundal height in relationship to anatomical locations of the abdomen Fundal height in relationship to anatomical locations matches the gestational age of the fetus 12 weeks (gestation) – Fundus can be palpated above the symphysis pubis. 16 weeks (gestation) – Fundus is midway between symphysis pubis and the umbilicus 20 weeks ( gestation ) – Fundus is located at the umbilicus 36 weeks (gestation) - Fundus is at Xiphoid process. (HIGHEST LEVEL) (pushes against the diaphragm and causes shortness of breath) 40 weeks (gestation) – not accurate because the fetus head has fallen back into pelvic cavity and uterus sinks to lowest level. (causes lightening because it reduces pressure on the diaphragm and makes breathing easier). After birth it should be 2 fingers breaths above umbilicus and firm. With palpation of the fundus the bladder must be empty to avoid elevation of the uterus. Position is to lie on back with knees slightly flexed. Things that can cause a discrepancy in the fundal height include number of fetus, fetal growth, amount of amniotic fluid, fibroids, trophoblastic disease. 2. Review the aspects of an assessment during a routine office visit and admission to the hospital. Aspect of assessment during routine office visit include (Prenatal Visit)
