NR 504 Week 8: Synthesis and Reflection of Learning
Reflect upon the learning that you have accomplished throughout the previous weeks, and assess your
achievement of each of the five course outcomes.
• CO 1: Discern leadership approaches that facilitate achievement of health outcomes through
interprofessional collaborative practice within micro-, meso-, and macro-level systems.
• CO 2: Appraise the role of the MSN-prepared nurse to lead safe, efficient, ethical, high-quality,
person-centered healthcare across complex systems.
• CO 3: Integrate communication modalities that convey cultural humility, value the diverse nature
of individuals, and cultivate healthful work environments.
• CO 4: Apply change and leadership theories to plan sustainable, evidence-based quality
improvement within an atmosphere that supports care for self and others.
• CO 5: Recognize individual strengths and opportunities for enhancement regarding leadership
characteristics reflective of a MSN-prepared nurse.

This class has taught me a lot about leadership and how the Masters prepared nurse is well
prepared to influence and lead change. One of the most effective leadership approaches we learned
about was the transformational style with an authentic, servant approach. This style inspires
engagement and collaboration within a relationship between leader and follower. This leadership
approach can be used at the micro-level to influence change that is focused on to a specific area, for
example a nursing unit in a hospital. At the meso-level, this style can inspire change within a larger
setting, for example, a change that is applicable to all the nursing units within a hospital. At the macro -
level, the transformation style can be used to lead sweeping change that impacts a very large group, for
example, an entire community. By utilizing this approach, the leader works to build a trusting and
supportive relationship with his/her followers so that they are inspired and motivated to be creative and
innovative enough to promote and adopt new ways of thinking and practicing. I feel I have gained
knowledge and skills that will allow me to become a more transformational leader in the future.
One way the MSN prepared nurse can be a leader within complex healthcare systems is by using
a systems approach and Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies to focus on
improving care and safety for patients using teamwork, collaboration, research and evidence based
practice, informatics, and quality improvement skills in order to ensure the best and safest care possible
for patients (Stalter & Mota, 2018). As a nurse educator, nurse executive, or informatics specialist, the
advanced practice nurse (APN) is in a position to lead and influence change to produce these desired
results. I have learned about the different levels of systems that can be impacted, and how each each
level or area influences and impacts many others, how each change has to be safe, ethical, person
centered leading to high quality results, or it may have detrimental outcomes or impacts in other areas
