A teacher can be regarded as competent if he or she is able to perform his or her education roles to the expected standard as stipulated by the National policy Framework for Teacher Education and Development. Beginner teachers need to develop basic knowledge and competencies to provide for quality teaching in the classroom 1.1 Curriculum Developer • Implement curriculum policies when teaching and applying assessment methods • Determine the aims and objectives of lessons • Plan and organize the sequence of the chosen content and implement it 1.2 Specialist in Teaching and Learning • Use a variety of resources, learning and teaching methods to accommodate the various learning styles of learners in classes. • Explore new strategies and discuss good and bad practices • Examine and change instructional practices to improve learner participation 1.3 Leader, administrator and manager • Make well-informed decisions I the classroom and school • Assess and record learners’ progress • Perform administrative duties such as keeping attendance registers 1.4 Scholar, researcher, and lifelong learner • Stay abreast of new technology, methods, strategies and techniques that facilitate learning • Develop constantly by attending conferences and workshops, and furthering studies wherever possible 1.5 Professional who plays a community, citizen and pastoral role • Respect different beliefs and attitudes, and show a willingness to work together with colleagues • Be understanding and support learners to develop them to their full potential 1.6 Specialist in a particular subject or phase • Be well trained and knowledgeable in the content, skills and values that are applicable to the specific grade, phase or subject • Provide learning experiences and ask higher-order questions that can allow learners to think critically • Use scaffolding techniques to guide learners to the next level 1.7 Assessment specialist • Be competent at creating, assessing and recording outcomes of learning activities. • Provide learners with detailed feedback and comments on assessed activities VAP2601 ASSIGNMENT 02 4 QUESTION 2: Name and discuss the different components to consider when planning a lesson for the arts. In order to plan a lesson successfully there are a variety of components that needs to be considered. 2.1 The grade and age group for whom the lesson is being planned Extensive knowledge of the developmental stages of learners in a specific Grade is important to consider before planning a lesson. The teacher should know the various ways learners will react to the topic and their learning needs, what their cognitive level is and what skills they already acquired to complete the art activity successfully 2.2 The topic, aim and objectives of a lesson according to CAPS Topics for all forms of creative arts are prescribed by CAPS to ensure that all learners from Grade R-12 are exposed to the same content and develop the same skills regardless of their socio-context. The aims and objectives for all topics are illustrated in the CAPS document and teachers need to adhere to the topics specified for each Grade in order to maintain a standard of quality education. 2.3 The planned work schedule for the year A work schedule indicates the number of periods and hours a teacher should use to teach topics in a certain time frame of the academic year in a specific subject. The teacher needs to adhere to the schedule in order to teach all the topics and to achieve the objectives set for these topics. 2.4 The time allocated for creative arts teaching in a specific grade Time allocation for creative arts and arts and culture ,on the timetable, can influence the completion of the final product of a specific topic 2.5 The resources available to teach the art form Arts materials can be pricey and need sufficient storage room. Therefore, a budget and space should be allocated and activities should be planned according to the resources available. The teacher can make use of contributions from parents and other sources of funding to augment the budget. 2.6 Teaching and learning methods that will be used to enhance learning Different teaching methods will be more suitable for different lesson objectives. Methods can either be learner centered which allow learners to inquire and learn new content for themselves, or teacher centred which are used to construct knowledge based on the teacher’s instruction. A teacher must choose a variety for each lesson to impart content and develop learner’s skill effectively. 2.7 Assessment methods, techniques and tools to evaluate a specific activity Assessment is used to determine a learners’s academic achievement and involve the collection and recording of information in order to assess learners progress. Assessment methods can be self, group, performance, peer and observation based. Assessment results can influence teacher’s selection of teaching and learning methods and enable them to determine whether learners are acquiring the skills and knowledge as defined by CAPS. VAP2601 ASSIGNMENT 02 5 2.8 Time for reflection on the lesson, by both the teacher and the learner, to improve teaching and learning Reflection allows both teacher and learners to establish if they have achieved the aims and objectives of the lesson. After the lesson, learners can complete a rubric to establish how well they understand the newly introduced concepts. They can assess what and how they are learning, what mistake were made and what worked well. QUESTION 3: Name and discuss the different teaching approaches in the contemporary art classroom. In any approach, learners should be increasingly empowered to take control of their own learning. Learners are more creative, imaginative and skillful when they work primarily from their own inspiration and passion. I will now name and discuss 15 teaching approaches. 3.1 Instruction Instruction forms the basis of any art lesson. New skills and techniques and processes are carefully introduced to learners so that they understand how they work. Some things learners need to be instructed in are: • Studio techniques • Using materials and media • Analysing artwork • Using reference material • Health and safety procedures 3.2 Demonstration and guided exploration Learners learn skills, techniques and processes best when they are shown, as well as told, how to perform them. Guided exploration involves the teacher demonstrating a concept or skill that is part of a larger set of skills or knowledge, and supervising the learners as they practice this first step. The process is repeated until learners master the required knowledge and skills of the lesson. 3.3 Experimentation Art needs to be experienced by learners in order for learning to occur, and therefore experimenting in central to the arts. In order to gain that experience and to encourage learning to be more meaningful, learners should be provided with opportunities to experiment in appropriate ways, with skills and techniques as well as with materials and equipment. 3.4 Commentary Learners should conduct an analysis of their own portfolios in front of an audience, usually the class. This will give them the opportunity to comment on and discuss their work. it will also encourage their language skills, and provide an understanding of the meaning and background of their work and how VAP2601 ASSIGNMENT 02 6 they interpreted the topic. Commentary allows learners to develop the confidence and competence to talk meaningfully about their art. 3.5 Lectures and internet presentations Much of the art appreciation course can be introduced formally by the way of lectures ad presentations, so that learners are provided with the necessary information about other people’s work of art, in a manner they understand. Learners should be encouraged to ask questions. It is valuable to invite guest speakers to the classroom, such as the following: • Artists • Past learners • Writers • Other teachers • Art critics 3.6 Research Giving learners research projects will allow them to investigate areas of study more fully themselves. Some of the research topics should be designed to increase previous knowledge and others to introduce extra and new themes not covered in class. Research should include visiting museums, exhibitions and galleries. 3.7 Art criticism Learners should be provided with opportunities to analyse and respond to art on a personal level. As well as gaining a sound knowledge of the history of art through lectures and research, art learners need to develop the ability to make their own judgement about art in a confident manner 3.8 Mentoring Learners who have already mastered certain techniques and processes can be used to guide other learners who may be difficulties. This will save time and prevent those learners needing extra help from losing interest while they wait for the teacher’s attention. Mentoring can be invaluable for struggling students, while also teaching more advanced learners compassion for others in the classroom. 3.9 Excursions Excursions should be part of the art experience all of the learners. These trips to art museums for example, allow learners to see and learn about the work of professional artists. Seeing artwork firsthand makes art meaningful. 3.10 Brainstorming Brainstorming is a thinking strategy that is used to help learners initiate diverse ways in which to solve problems as well as to create questions, ideas and examples, and to explore a specific idea or topic. It is during brainstorming that learners spontaneously share ideas without making judgements about them. 3.11 Conferencing Conferences take place between the teacher and the learner and requires an inviting, supportive and trusting atmosphere to encourage open discussion. During a learner-teacher conference, learners can: VAP2601 ASSIGNMENT 02 7 • Report on their progress • Consider problems and solutions • Note strengths • Note areas of improvement 3.12 Cooperative learning Cooperative learning teaches learners how to work together as a team to achieve a mutual learning goal. The group should function as a whole and each member should contribute to the final product produced by the group. 3.13 Discussion Discussion is a collaborative approach through which learners: • Explore their thinking • Respond to ideas • Process information • Express their thoughts in communicating these to peers and the teacher. 3.14 Exploration Focused exploration is a method of instruction where learners can choose to use the materials and equipment that are available in the classroom. Through observing the learners, the teacher can provide direction as assistance as needed. In free exploration, learners may also choose to use the materials available in the classroom, but here no guidance or assistance is given and learners are free to explore in their own way. 3.15 Guided activities Guided activity is a key instructional activity that is introduced by the teacher and based on assessments whereby information was gained. To guide activities further, the teacher can choose a few options, such as to: • Ask a few questions in order to guide the learner’s thoughts • Provide stimuli to extend thinking • Ask learners to demonstrate a familiar concept in a new way • Encourage learners to try new activities .
