ENG1502 - Foundations In English Language Studies 01/2022. 8.5.1 Assignment 1 Answer all questions that follow. Question 1 The different grammatical aspects or structures of the English language interact with one another in a systematic and yet complex way to produce a meaningful linguistic system. ENG1502/101/0/2022 11 Refer to Tutorial Letter 501, pages 8 – 9 for more information on the grammatical aspects/structures. Bearing in mind the above statement, read the short scenarios in Column A and the concepts in Column B. Match the statement in Column A with the most appropriate concept in Column B which best represents the language aspects in the English language. Next to each number, simply write the concept. e.g. 1.0 = Sociolinguistics Do NOT rewrite the statement. Column A Column B 1.1 When I was in China, I could not read anything written in Mandarin – all the signs on the posters were just strokes, which made no sense to me. I wish I could as I feel that I miss a lot of information. Phonetics 1.2 After killing his wife in such a brutal manner, I agree with those who call him an animal who should not be allowed to roam the street of a democratic society. He truly is an animal. Morphology 1.3 To make an essay interesting, we are always encouraged to use different types of sentences, including other stylistic strategies, such as foregrounding or highlighting information. Semantics 1.4 The fact that some languages indicate plurality at the end of words and others at the beginning is interesting. It shows how diverse languages are. Orthography 1.5 Although I still struggle with the signs on the IPA chart, after attending a virtual class last week, I am beginning to make sense of how the signs represent speech sounds. Pragmatics Phonology Syntax (10 marks) [10 marks] Question 2 In Tutorial Letter 501, on page 21 there is a brief discussion of functional speech varieties. Functional varieties tend to be limited to certain speech communities who share identifiable membership. Taking this into account, study the following text and answer the questions that follow. 12 How strong is the evidence for global warming? Lombardo (2009) puts forward the view that the significant rise in the earth’s temperature over the past century is the product of increased levels of atmospheric CO2 caused by greater use of fossil fuels. He maintains that this position is now generally agreed, and that steps should be taken to reduce future warming by restricting the output of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. However, Wong (2011) presents a range of counterarguments. She mentions evidence of historical climate change that cannot have been caused by rising levels of CO2, and also discusses the difficulty of obtaining reliable data on temperature changes, as well as other claims that solar activity may affect the amount of cloud cover and hence temperature levels. Such uncertainty, she considers raises doubts about the value of cutting CO2 production. Source: Bailey, S. (2015). Academic Writing: A Handbook for International Students. London and New York: Routledge, p. 63. 2.1 Which functional speech variety is used in the above text? (2 marks) 2.2 Give a justification for the answer you indicated in 2.1 above by citing two words or phrases. (4 marks) 2.3 Provide the Standard English form of the words/phrases you mentioned in 2.2. (4 marks) 2. 4 Write a summary of the above text in standard English. Your summary should not be more than 100 words. (10 marks) [20 marks] Question 3 Carter and Goddard (2016: 46) acknowledge that although the book How to Analyse Text focuses on verbal language, this language works in conjunction with other signs to make meaning. Bearing this statement in mind, read the following picture and answer the questions that follow. ENG1502/101/0/2022 13 3.1 Which element would you say is the linguistic sign? (2 marks) 3.2 Which element would you consider to be a non-linguistic sign? (2 marks) 3.3 Put together (the linguistic sign and non-linguistic sign), what meaning is being conveyed by the two elements? Your answer must not exceed 40 words. (4 marks) 3.4 Find a text that has a linguistic sign(s) and a non-linguistic sign(s). Identify the linguistic sign and non-linguistic sign in the text you provided. Include the text in your response. Make sure that the text is NOT copyrighted. (4 marks) 3.5 Explain the meaning that is conveyed by the linguistic sign(s) and a non-linguistic sign(s) combined in the text you have provided. (8 marks) [20 marks] 8.5.2 Assignment 2 This assignment is premised on the second outcome of this module which is your understanding as well as ability to explain the grammatical and functional structure of the English language as used to create meaning in different contexts. In order to demonstrate your understanding of the grammatical and functional aspect of the English language, you will be required to complete the following task.
