Identify local, state, and national resources which facilitate safe and effective transitions of care for older adults. 5. Incorporate professional values, attitudes, and expectations regarding ageism when caring for the older adult. 6. Outline the importance of advocating for older adults in management of their care. Course Overview In this course, care models specific to the older adult are explored. Students examine perceptions of ageism and the impact of those attitudes on the healthcare of older adults. Resources to promote autonomy and safety with healthcare decisions as a client ages are discussed with an emphasis on ethical advocacy in gerontology. The clinical component provides students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in healthcare settings. In standard nursing simulation, studies have revealed that students have reported increased levels of communication, problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking. However, with virtual nursing simulation, students find increased realism with use of computer graphics and applications from the gaming industry.
