A large percentage of foodborne disease outbreaks are spread by contaminated hands. Appropriate hand washing practices can reduce the risk of foodborne illness and other infections. Handwashing can reduce the risk of respiratory infections by 16%” (Hygiene Fast Facts,2016). Teaching Plan Criteria: Nursing Diagnosis: Risk for infection related to not properly washing hands. Readiness for Learning: Emotional: Show up ready to discuss/ contribute to class, participants are attentive, and demonstrate technique taught back to teacher Experiential: Participants are participating, asking questions, and actually practicing handwashing Learning Theory to Be Utilized: The teach back method will be the learning theory I will apply to my presentation on handwashing. Participants will explain the health information in their own words after the information has been taught to them, allowing the teacher to assess how well they have explained or taught the participants, regardless of health literacy. Goal: Healthy People 2020 has some objectives that teach the importance of handwashing; “FS5: Food safety- Hand washing after defecation, after cleaning a baby's bottom, and before preparing and eating food can reduce the risk of diarrhea” (Evidence Based Summary, 2015). “HAI1/2: Hospital Acquired infections- Studies have shown that proper education and training of health care workers increases compliance with and adoption of best practices (e.g., infection control, hand hygiene, attention to safety culture) to prevent HAIs” (EBS, 2015) How Does This HP2020 Objective Relate to Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives The 1978 Alma Ata deceleration was focused on primary healthcare as a key to attainment of the goal of health for all. Healthy people 2020 and Alma Ata have similar goals which is ensuring better health outcomes for all, backing the goal of increasing life expectancy. People must maintain a healthy lifestyle, and primary health care is the key to attainment of the goal of health for all. Develop Behavioral Objectives (Including Domains), Content, and Strategies/Methods: Behavioral Objective and Domain Content Strategies/Methods 1. When should you wash your hands? 1. Using bathroom, before and after meals, leaving and entering a patient’s room, after touching your face 1. Show what happens when you do not wash your hands. 2. The best method to washing hands. 2. Show participants how to wash their hands. 2. Have participants wash their hands for 30 seconds and make corrections along the way. 3. Diseases or illnesses that are prevented from washing hands. 3.
